Why preparation matters

Proper preparation for a spray tan is crucial because it ensures an even application and longer-lasting results. It helps the tan adhere smoothly to the skin, reducing the risk of streaks or uneven patches, ultimately giving you a more natural and flawless finish.

To prepare for your spray tan, it's important to shower, shave, and exfoliate at least 12-24 hours before your appointment, as doing these too close to your appointment can leave pores open, causing small dots to appear. If you need to rinse off before the appointment, stick to quick, cool showers to avoid opening your pores further. Opt for gel-based body washes rather than Dove soaps, which can affect the tan's development. Avoid waxes, massages, and manicures or pedicures 48 hours before and after your appointment, as oils and products from these treatments can interfere with the tan. Also, avoid intense sun exposure that could result in a sunburn, as peeling skin can affect how your tan develops and lasts. Finally, come to your appointment free of lotion, oils, deodorant, perfume, makeup, and jewelry for the best results.

After following the pre-tan instructions, be sure to wear long, dark, and loose clothing to your appointment to prevent the tan from transferring to items—though it is water-soluble and should wash out. Opt for open-toed shoes, like sandals or slides, and avoid light-colored or tight-fitting clothing, such as bras, tank tops, shorts, or tennis shoes, to ensure your tan develops evenly.
